The Fianna Fáil nominee Jim Gavin has declared his withdrawal from the Irish presidential election immediately.

He was poised to be one of three candidates vying for the Irish presidency, beside Independent TD Catherine Connolly and Heather Humphreys of Fine Gael.

Nonetheless, Sunday night he said in a statement that he "committed an error which did not align with his character and his personal standards."

"After weighing these points, I've resolved to withdraw from the presidential election contest right away and go back to my family," he stated in a statement.

Further updates expected.
