Norris Dismisses Oscar Piastri's Complaints Regarding Singapore GP Passing Attempt
The McLaren driver presented an uncompromising retort to the criticisms of his teammate Piastri after their clash at the Singapore Grand Prix, declaring how any racer that wouldn't try a similar passing move does not deserve to compete in F1.
On-Track Clash Triggers Internal Conflict
The Grand Prix at the Marina Bay circuit was won by George Russell, however was defined by the contact during the initial turns, when Norris attacked Piastri then collided with his teammate following Norris had nudged the car driven by Verstappen in front.
“Anyone on the grid would have tried exactly the same thing as I did, so if you blame me for only going on the inside of an opening then you should not compete in F1,” he declared. “There was nothing wrong with what I did.”
Championship Battle Heats Up
The two McLaren drivers are in a close fight to win the championship, after McLaren having secured the constructors’ championship at the Singapore GP. The pair ended up third and fourth, as Lando closed the gap on his title rival to twenty-two points with six meetings left.
Piastri was incensed at the time, stating it as unfair for the team would not intervene to have Norris return the place since he felt he had forced Piastri off the line. Nonetheless, the stewards took no action.
Driver's Explanation
I underestimated a little bit the proximity I was near Max, but that's part of racing plus I would have finished ahead of Piastri regardless,” stated Norris. I took the inside line so the last thing I want to do is to make contact with my teammate. Given my title position I'm in, I can't risk such a move compared to Piastri. The FIA deemed it okay and the team agreed.”
Piastri's Response
Oscar Piastri commented he wouldn't judge yet until the team held a meeting. “I need to look at the video and in more detail and reach my judgment then,” he said. “It is the first lap, pressure is intense and drivers are encouraged to express our opinions about the incident. I expressed mine and it will be discussed going forward.”
McLaren Boss's Perspective
The McLaren team principal Andrea Stella also emphasized the team would review their method in dealing with both drivers. We must place everything in perspective. These are the remarks of a driver in a Formula One car, there's the intensity of competition. The data we have is merely his perspective. As usual we will have a constructive discussion, move forward and improve.”
